The team had a good season and finished at 3-3 and in fourth place. The year finished with a win at Inverness Gold. Other wins were at Homestead and Castle Pines. Losses were to Aurora, Inverness Silver, and the Pinery.
Thanks again to all of the team for participating in the practices and matches. It turned out to be great tennis and a lot of fun.

2009 East/West tournament
This event is scheduled for the 12th of September, but is tentative. Here are the variables: First, we have three seniors teams that have the potential to go to district playoffs, and the playoffs are that weekend. This could take a number of players out of the tournament and make it hard to hold the event. Second, we need good participation, even if there are no teams in district. Therefore, if we don't get good numbers signed up, we will have to cancel the event this year. In that case, we will turn the event into an end-of summer mixer and just play for fun. More will be forthcoming from Ron and Gail, so please watch your Email in box.

Super Senior Men's Team Just Misses Playoffs
The 2009 Super Senior men's 7.0 team ended up 1 win from making the playoffs.
The District Tournament would accept 3 teams from each division and we ended up in 4th place 1 win out.
I am very proud of the way we played this year. We lost a couple of heart breakers that would have make a big difference in the outcome and final results. This was a great group of guys.
The SS Division is a very competitive group. We are playing against clubs who have coaches, conduct drills and players that have been playing together for years. I think our team made a very good run at the playoffs.
Team Members are:
Duncan, Larry
Johnson, Dan
Martin, Dick
Posluszny, John
Rankin, Don
Stark, Ron
Wesley, Braden
Sedillo, Paul Captain

Friday Night Lights #2
Friday Night Lights on July 17th was another success. We had several combinations of men's and women's doubles followed by snacks and dinner on the Eagle's Nest Patio. A good time was had by all.
The next Friday Night event is scheduled for July 31st.
The next Friday Night event is scheduled for July 31st.
Court viewing area is complete
The new court viewing area is complete! It is located west of court 1 and allows viewing of courts 1 and 2. The flagstone area currently has two benches and is big enough to also accomdate lawn chairs. The bushes and windscreens have been removed to provide clearer views of the courts. Its perfect for watching USTA matches or any other tennis event.
Doubles Tournament 8/22 - 8/23
The annual doubles tournament has been scheduled for August 22 - August 23. The entry fee will be $5 per person per event. There will be men's double's, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. East-West Tournament Rescheduled to 9/12
We are rescheduling the event for Saturday, September 12th.
Please set that date aside if you are interested in playing. Because of this rescheduling, we'll postpone our End of Summer Mixer (which was originally scheduled for September 13th) to a later date.

Breakfast at Wimbledon (Eagle's Nest style)
On July 5th, twenty+ members of HEB tennis club enjoyed a typical English breakfast and watched the men's finals at Wimbledon on a big screen TV. The Eagle's Nest Restaurant did us proud and served scrambled eggs, potatoes with onions and peppers, link sausage, bacon, grilled mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, strawberries and cream, toast, orange juice, coffee and tea - and it was delicious. It was great fun watching the last day of Wimbledon with our tennis buddies.

First Ever Friday Night Lights
Our first ever Friday Night Under the Lights went really well. The weather was kind to us considering how changeable it has been recently. About 24 members attended the event, each playing 8 games before rotating with a different group of four. There was no real order to the event. It was "just turn up and play" and it seemed to work great! Some members arrived later due to work schedules. Most people stayed until almost 9:00 PM and enjoyed the beautiful evening under the lights at HEB.
The event was such a success that it will be repeated every 2 weeks starting July 17th.

Summer Kickoff
The weather cooperated on May 31st for our Summer Mixer. About 30+ people participated, and we were able to keep four courts occupied for three hours. Having worked up an appetite, everyone moved towards the Eagle's Nest Restaurant where a fantastic BBQ was served on the patio.

Reserving court time
Anyone wishing to schedule court time can call the Pro Shop at 303-400-6700. You need to call them between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. as their voice mail is not active; if you leave a message, they will not return your call. They have a listing of all pre-scheduled tennis matches and events and should be able to help you get courts reserved. Please let me know if you have any difficulties and I will do my best to address these issues.

Usage of bulletin boards
There has been some confusion about our 2 bulletin boards - and deservedly so. The indoor bulletin board will still give presence to our CLUB by all who pass that way. It will be used for any general information and also, the sign-ups for any social activities and any tournaments.
The outdoor gazebo bulletin board will be used to sign-up for any organized weekly tennis, i.e. the group mixers and tournaments; also for anyone wanting to join a USTA team.

Social Committee members needed!
We are in need of volunteers to take over for Gail and Ron as our Social Directors next year. No "couple" has stepped up to that task, as yet. It has been suggested that if we do not get a volunteer couple to take over for Gail and Ron, then the board will schedule for the next season and request volunteers to take these individually. If anyone would like to step up and volunteer to take over the entire season as our Social Committee, IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. WE NEED YOUR HELP.

Looking for a tennis partner?
It has been suggested that we post the names of our tennis players, their ranking and their contact information. If one wanted to play tennis and did not know who to call, the presidents would have that information available - good for all by generating new friends and generating more "casual" play on our courts.
If you are interested, please send me your name - ranking - email address - telephone number or numbers and we (Nancy and I) will start making up this list.

Courts, viewing area, and equipment
Tennis Courts - Per Jeff Powles, our courts will be patched by Friday, May 22, so we should be able to host any USTA matches and also don't have to worry about stepping in a hole and injuring ourselves.
Tennis Court Viewing area with benches - As of 5/19/09, HEB is "still a few weeks out" on completing that project, per Jeff Powles.
Equipment:
Two new brooms (and labeled as property of Eagle Bend Tennis) have been purchased for use on our courts and we will probably be purchasing at least one new squeegee. We have sent a note to HEB requesting their help in blowing off our courts and keeping them free of debris. So far, I do not believe that has happened. I will stay on top of this and talk to Eric (head golf pro) this week to see if we can make this happen.
Two ball hoppers have been purchased (also labeled Eagle Bend Property) and will be placed at our courts. One for courts 1 and 2 and one for courts 3 and 4. We will be purchasing enclosed containers that will fit under the benches on the courts. These containers will be used for "old" balls. Our tennis players will then be able to go up to the courts and practice serves, various shots, etc. with the equipment on site and available for use by all.

sign up for Senior men's USTA tennis teams
Even though our "Super Senior" teams have yet to start their matches, we already need to think about forming our "Senior" teams. Teams need to be formed by June 12th and matches start the week of July 20th.
Sign up sheets are on the outside "gazebo" bulletin board. There is not a big hurry in signing up, but the next time you're near the tennis courts, you might want to get your name on the list.
Good luck to all the Super Senior teams next week for their first matches.

Details about upcoming spring mixer
It's that time of year again for our annual Summer Kickoff Tennis Mixer and BBQ. The Mixer is scheduled for Sunday, May 31st, with tennis from 1:00 - 4:00pm. It's a little earlier in the day this year, so maybe we can avoid the late afternoon winds and rains. We will have a BBQ on the Patio at the Club House immediately following the tennis (BBQ from 4:00 - 6:00pm).
Everyone of all levels is welcome. We will have Mens Doubles, Womens Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. This is always a fun, social event and a good way to kick off tennis at HEB. Non tennis playing spouses/significant others are welcome to attend the tennis as spectators and to attend the BBQ.
The tennis is free and the BBQ is $12/person. You just pay for the BBQ that day. The menu will be: BBQ Pork Sandwiches, Chicken Breast Sandwiches, cole slaw, iced tea & lemonade. There will be a cash bar available.
Please sign up on the "indoor" tennis bulletin board in the hallway behind the pro shop. We hope to see many of you there again this year.

Tennis Court Repair
The courts are being tested and a decision will be made soon about how to repair them. Please read the following from Chuck Strauss and Nancy Bishoff.
From Chuck Strauss:
HEB management is working on a long-term fix for our courts. As you may remember, in years past, the courts have been resurfaced twice a year. Due to ground water influx, the repairs would usually last a whopping 3 weeks max and the surface problems would be back. Something, clearly, needed to be done. A study was conducted to determine why ground water was seeping under the courts. The initial study determined that (good news) the problem is flow from normal landscaping activities for the grounds and putting green. This can easily be stopped by installing a French drain around the courts, and that will be done.More study work, however is being done to determine the extent of the courts’ problems. If there is a barrier between the concrete slab and the courts’ surface, then, after the French drain is installed the courts can be resurfaced and we will have very playable courts that should remain that way for some time. If, however, this is not the case then we have a major problem and the courts will have to be torn out and start over. That’s the worst case scenario and will cost big bucks, and likely not happen this year. The tests on the courts were done yesterday, and the guys doing the work don’t think we have a major problem.Once this study is done, and if we don’t have to tear out the courts, resurfacing can be done almost immediately and we should be back in business by mid May. We will keep you posted, so please check back periodically for updates, or call Chuck @ 720-318-7598.
From Nancy Bishoff:
Liz and I were at the courts today doing a little practice. I revised the Club Tennis Calendars to reflect the 3 USTA Super Senior's play. I dropped them by the Pro Shop and Eric was there. I also printed a copy for Jeff, and Eric said he would make sure that Jeff received a copy. Just an FYI so you would not have to do it.
Also, the guys were drilling the holes when we were up there. I talked with one of the guys who seemed knowledgeable. He said they were going to test the samples and also come back in 2 weeks and recheck their holes. Currently the "holes" are filled up with concrete. This guy said he did not think it looked like your worst scenario. He had several thoughts on the courts, but kind of said, it appears to be a mystery.
We are really running out of time. Maybe we should ask Gail Hedy to call USTA and see if we can arrange to not host the other teams, but simply be the HOME team and play on their courts??? USTA might be able to either direct us or arrange that.

Men's 2009 USTA teams
First, good luck to our men’s 7.0 Super Senior team. Play starts just after the first week of May and we know they will do great.
Second, men’s USTA Senior’s league will start just after the 4th of July, and, I think, we need to be signed up by early June. Sign up information will follow as I get that information, but please start thinking about that league. It’s fun! Last year we had a 3.5 team and will again this year. If we get additional players, we can add a team. We can also add a 3.0 team if we get enough interested players. In addition to team members, we also need captains. Not a big deal, but we could sure use the help.

Winter mixer
Our first Mixer of 2009 went well at Monaco. Twenty members and guests of HEB members participated and everyone had a great time. Each couple brought a plate of food to share with others, and they also brought their favorite drinks - we stayed until the club closed.
Thanks for the photo Al!

Deck the Halls
Mary Kay and Don B. kindly took time out of their busy schedule to assemble and dress our Christmas tree - and what a good job they did! This year, we have new additions to the decorations. Mary Kay used photographs of our members, put them in frames and added a little ribbon to hang on the tree. They are very cute! Liz helped a little, but the majority of work was done by Mary Kay and Don. We thank you for taking the time, and appreciate your efforts.
