Another successful mixer

On July 22nd, about 35-40 players and spouses enjoyed another monthly tennis mixer. The afternoon was highlighted by some good tennis on the courts and a lot of socialization under the canopy purchased for us by the HEB Angels. Thanks to the Angels, we had a comfortable time in spite of the sunny and hot day.

The evening brought about a hot dog/hamburger dinner on the patio that was prepared for us by the Eagle's Nest personnel.

We learned about Marcia Sedillo's bronze metal in tennis at the national Senior Olympics held at Nashville this month. Congratulations Marcia!

Thanks to Larry Lindsay and Jerry Wagner

The Beginner and Refresher Classes continue to be a success thanks to Larry Lindsay and Jerry Wagner. It was reported at the July meeting that 14 HEB residents have taken part in these classes. The classes take place Tuesday at 11 AM and Wednesday at 8 AM. If you know of neighbors that are interested in playing tennis again, let them know of these classes.

Job well done guys for involving more residents in our tennis program!!

Men's Super Senior USTA team

The first HEB men's super senior team has finished their season. They were 2 and 7. Most matches were close but we just couldn't close them. We played each team 3 times. They were:

1st place Greenwood Athletic Club
2nd The Knolls
3rd Colorado Athletic Club at Inverness
4th HEB

Our 2 wins were against GAC (the winner) and CACI.

Photo is attached: (we couldn't get everyone to show for the pic)

Front row: Paul Sedillo (captain) and Dan Johnson
Back Row: Dick Martin, Don Rankin, Tom Quinn, Ron Stark and Dick Newman
Not Pictured: Don Patrick and John Krueger

Thanks to Paul for organizing the team!!

Thanks to the team members for representing HEB and congratulations on a good first year!

July tennis meeting with Jeffrey Wells

For those of you who did not attend our HEB Tennis Club meeting last week, we'd like you to know that Jeffrey Wells, HEB's new Club Manager, attended our meeting.

He has only been with HEB for about 3 weeks and is already doing a great job. He will be the person to contact if you have any questions or concerns about the tennis courts. It's probably best to let Larry Place or me know of your questions and we'll relay them to Jeffrey, but you are also welcome to talk to him directly if you prefer. His email address is: JWells@HeritageEagleBend.com.

He plans on attending all of our meetings, which is a great improvement with how we were treated in the past. He is already on top of our problems and we are hopeful that our concerns will be handled in a timely manner. All of us at the Tennis Club meeting were very impressed by him. We are encouraged that things will run more smoothly from now on. You may want to personally welcome him to HEB.

Tennis meeting with Edward Simpkins and Jeffrey Wells

At our next tennis committee meeting on Monday July 9th at 7:00 PM, you will have a chance to meet and talk to Edward Simpkins and Jeffrey Wells. Jeffrey is the new Clubhouse Manager. This will be an opportunity to discuss tennis at HEB and improvements you would like to see for the rest of 2007 and for 2008.

I hope to send a few questions to Edward by Thursday so we can resolve a few issues at the meeting. If you have any questions you would like to have presented, please forward them to me. After the list is reviewed, I plan to allow time for questions from the group.

I hope to see many of you at the meeting.

Court Repairs

Our HEB Tennis Courts are scheduled to be repaired on Monday & Tuesday July 9th & 10th. 2 courts will be done each day with 2 remaining playable each day.

Therefore, on Monday, July 9th, we will have 2 courts available for our women's drills, but there will be no drop-in tennis on that day.

Also, there should be 2 courts available for the men's play on Monday evening, the 9th, and Tuesday morning, the 10th.

If there is a change in the scheduling for repairs, I'll let you all know.

We are planning a Tennis Mixer & BBQ on Sunday, July 22nd. Tennis will be from 4:00 - 7:00 pm and the BBQ will be from 7:00 - 9:00 pm on the patio.

The meal includes a side dish & lemonade or iced tea. There will also be a keg with $2.00 beers and & $6.00 pitchers.

There is a sign up sheet on the Tennis Bulletin Board. If you spouse/significant other does not play tennis, they are welcome to come and join us.

Men's Events

I thought I would clarify what to expect at the events listed in the schedule.

All events are drop-in tennis and you do NOT need reservations. All events last approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours and are weather permitting.

The mixed tennis consists of mixed doubles and men's/women's doubles depending on who shows up. You do not need to be part of a couple to play.

During doubles on Monday night and Tuesday mornings, players will pair themselves up based on who shows up and may trade partners and/or courts after each set.

The refresher classes on Tuesday and Wednesday are for people looking to get into tennis for the first time or who have not played in quite a while.

Thursday night started out as a singles night but players may also decide to play doubles/Australian doubles depending on the number of participants.

At the Saturday doubles, players will be paired up with players of similar ability. 4 or 5 players will be assigned a court and will trade partners during the morning. Scores will be kept and player's HEB rankings will be adjusted from week to week.

Tennis Dues & Meeting Notes

This is just a reminder for those of you who have not paid their $10 dues. You can give the money to any of the Tennis Club Officers (Larry Place, Gail Hedy, Carrie Sharp or Jim Rogers).

It was decided in our Tennis Club Meeting this evening that we will be using some of our dues money to purchase: Court Numbers, Squeegie Replacement Rollers & Push Brooms.

Also, Jenny Hays has generously offered to buy pads for 3 of our light posts, since some of these light posts were installed too close to the courts and are very dangerous. Thanks so much, Jenny, and welcome back for the summer.

Beginner and Refresher Classes

Some members of our team recall the last time they played tennis. They remember using a wooden racquet that was kept inside a wooden frame!!! These members have turned up for Monday morning practice but feel they have been away from the sport for too long and need help.In an effort to accommodate those members of HEB who want to get back into tennis after a lengthy absence, or for those who have never played and want to learn tennis for the first time in their lives, the tennis club is offering special beginner’s sessions.Gail Hedy, co-president of our tennis club said “We have lessons on Tuesdays @ 11:00 a.m. Larry & Jenny Lindsay are the volunteers who are giving those lessons. Their first lesson will be this Tuesday, June 5th. We already have 4 people who are signed up to take that lesson. We also have lessons on Wednesday mornings @ 8:00 a.m. These lessons are given by Jerry Wagner and Carrie Sharp. So far, one person has signed up for that lesson. We want to encourage everyone who is interested to come to these classes.”

Women and Men’s Tennis Event

On Sunday, June 3rd, the tennis season officially began with a fantastic afternoon of tennis with mixed doubles followed by a Pot Luck Supper. Everyone contributed a dish to the table and it blended nicely with the food and drinks that Gail and Ron supplied. All in all, it was an excellent afternoon and evening. We very much appreciate Gail and Ron (pictured) for hosting the event – we all had a wonderful time. Many thanks!
